Too many gears on my derailleur!

I have a compact front chainset (2 chainrings) but for some reason my front derailleur thinks i have about 6.

When I want to change gears on the front I go through at least 3 or 4 clicks each way to change either up or down.

Should the derailleur not have simply 2 stops, one for each chainring?

Have I missed something here?

    If your shifter is for a triple there could be six positions to allow for trimming so that you can use a wider range of the cassette without the chain rubbing on the front mech.

    Have checked if the cable end stop seated correctly i.e. is it possible some of the clicks you are hearing aren't actually pulling cable as they should?

    Campag does use multiple clicks to change the chainrings. It allows for fine tuning the chain position to avoid chain rub. Or are you using Shimano?

    Nothing to do with he derailure. The clicks are in the shifter.

    ID the shifter and read the set up info if you need to set it up.

    If it is already on the bike and set up and you are wondering about all the alternative positions that the shifter allows they are fr stopping chain rub. Trimming. As you work through the rear cogs the chain angle moves and can rub on the mech cage. These trim positions allow you to shut it up and ride in a bit more peace and quiet.

    Cheers for the reply guys!

    I do have a campag groupset, so this trimming explains the extra clicks. I need to fine tune the gearing anyway so will have a look at limits .etc then.

    That's the nice thing about Campag. You can trim the front mech.
    To have just 2 positions may be fine but equally you may find that the chain rubs a touch in certain cross overs. Hence the ability to trim. Many people wish other shifter did that.
    NB. as with absolutely everything, this is a matter of taste!

    They do? New one on me. Having said that my new Campag stuff isn't as good as the old stuff. only 6 positions not about 10.

    Sram have also had this for ages, though only on one ring. They switched from small ring trim to big ring trim a few years ago.

    Not that I've ever needed it with Sram kit though.
