Cheap replacement forks for Suntour XCT

I've entered the Cycling Weekly AdventureX in October. 60 miles partly on road, partly off road. The off road bits are mainly bridleways and forest tracks.

I'm planning on using the bike I got to ride round Grizedale with my daughter - a cheap ex-hire Kona Lanai Deluxe from the Grizedale hire place. For short rides with my daughter the bike is fine. But for a longer ride, its very energy sapping. I've done a couple of 30milers on it, and it felt much harder than 50 milers on my road bike. I've already bought some Schwalbe CX Comp tyres to help with the rolling resistance. I'm wondering whether to replace the stock Suntour XCT V3 fork with something more suitable.

I'm thinking Rigid for two reasons - the AdventureX bumpf suggests cross bikes are most suitable, which would suggest the route isn't too rocky - cross bikes tend not to have suspension. Rigid are going to be cheaper, surely? I wouldn't want to spend more than £70-80, seeing as the bike itself was only £180.

I've seen Kinesis Maxlight XLT and Surly Instigator forks on Wiggle that fit in with not wanting to spend much and both appear to be designed as replacements for 100mm travel suspension forks.

I'm just not too sure whether they're the right things - do most base-spec type forks have 1 1/8" steerers? I need the forks to have disc brake mounts.

The other alternative is to use my road bike (Trek Domane 2), but my experience on the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath a couple of weeks ago suggests thats a BAD IDEA.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks.
