Why are all spokes now coloured black, I want shiny stainless steel back.

DT make silver spokes. IMO silver spokes tend to look cheaper.
  • Silver spokes are half the price of black.
  • Hardly. Spokes should be black though.
  • If most spokes are stainless steel, why go to the extra cost, bother and weight of painting them black?

No additional weight, it's an oxide coating I believe.
  • Awaits the "well if it's a coating it must weigh something" comments.

I have an SS wheelset with silver spokes, chep black spokes are painted, dearer are an oxide coating but it still scratches rather easily.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Really? I've never 'scratched' a black spoke in my life, and it's basically all I've had on about 20 sets of wheels.
  • Bet if I attacked them with some wet and dry paper they'd 'scratch'.

I have. It looks ghastly, which is why stopped using steel spokes, and now use ones made entirely of black.

Sounds dangerous at night - a complete absence of light isn't conducive to being spotted.
  • Unless you don't want to be spotted ;)

Legend has it that these spokes were hand crafted by Ronnie James Dio, and Ozzy Osbourne, in the depths of Marilyn Manson's worst nightmare.

    Pedal harder.

The real colour of spokes is neither 'steel' nor 'black'; it's 'blur', though 'mud' is allowable too
  • I still want silver spokes, they match my hair colour better.

Thats why bike shoes, shorts, jackets, hydration packs, all have reflective strips so we cant be 100% ninja.

Added to a 900 lumen head torch I don't think black spokes are a real issue.

I was imagining that spokes of absolute black would actually absorb other light though, almost like an invisibility cloak.
  • Is that the same black as on the new Rockshox Pike's?

It's the same black as Yeehaa's cold, dark soul.
    (Note correct use of apostrophe).

Then I'm matting my black spokes tonight.

No, they need to be made of black. You're missing the point.
  • So as far as I see it this is an excuse for new spokes (anything new is good)?

    Mrs:- Those are new spokes!
Me:- Nope, no new spokes there.
    Mrs:- They look different.
Me:- There are no spokes in the wheel, only blackness.
    Mrs:- *gives funny look*

Spokes:- *absorbes Mrs and ends all worldly problems*
