Hi there, totally newbie to the forum here, be gentle. I have searched the forums for my problem but have not found an exact match or have missed it (apologies if I have).

Basically, whilst servicing my Dahon Espresso I noticed that there is play in the "crank region". Let me explain. If you grasp both cranks and attempt to move one of them towards/away from the bike there is a small movement that can be felt on the opposing side to that which you moved.

Any ideas?

  • A bike like that probably has a cartridge bottom bracket. Assuming everything is done up correctly it may just need replacing.

Check Park Tool's site if you want to do it yourself or find a good LBS.

Like this? Yes, as above, sounds like bottom bracket has failed. Sealed bearing, Square taper w/bolt. Dimensions will be marked/stamped on existing one. Sometimes the acle length is stamped in the axle and visible when installed, othertimes it is only marked on the case and you need to remove it to see - or to measure it up. You need the axle width, bottom bracket shell width and it's most likely to be British thread (aka BSA or BS).

Thanks for the advice everyone. Might try doing this one myself.
