so for the money is the cannondale fine..it is now £4500

Around that price point you're not going to get anything amazing, 29ers tend to be more expensive than 26" bikes so there are compromises, like cable brakes and 8 speed drivetrains as opposed to 9 or 10 speeds.
If he likes it then I'm sure it should be just fine, especially for £450.
This is a similar price though, maybe worth a look if sizes are right

That Vitus Angry Bird linked to looks great for the money.0

Compared to a similar priced 26er that is vastly inferior, in a 26er you would have those forks on a £350 carrera vulcan which also has Hydraulic disc brakes, you would have to really really want a 29er to get that over a much better 26er for the same money (Voodoo Hoodoo has a 2 level better fork, better gears, hydraulic brakes, better crankset all for the same money).Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Try and persuade him to get a 26" bike. Much better value and lighter. Personally I wouldn't touch a 29er at that price point
