A mate of mine is Looking to buy a bike and has a Budget of £1000 (Bike To Work Scheme)!

In your Opinions, what is the Best Bike under £1000 for him please? I have recommended mine (Spec Allez Compact) as i Love it but just thought i would see what You All think too?

He is New to the Sport so will need a Low Climbing Gear and he also wants a High Top End Gear to Whizz around as quick as poss when poss too, 8)

Giant Def 1 Won a Magazine Vote a while back but i just thought i would ask you all for your Expert 1st Hand advice instead please? :D

Loads available at that price and likely just as many different opinions so I'll give mine.
Planet X Pro Carbon Ultegra or SRAM build @ £999 and cycle scheme available.

Best bet is to do as you are. Make a list of what you want from a road bike , riding style, compact / triple, rough idea of frame size needed etc and then see what you can find in the current 2013 sales. There are some good deals at the moment my road bike including extras was reduced from £900 to £700 for a ten speed compact. I wanted a ten speed compact, with a more comfortable than race riding position that would be OK to ride over the winter.

Try some test rides and make list of the bikes they like the ride and look of. Then check the prices, specs and reviews if the bikes they like to make sure you get a good deal. Most bikes at a price point are very similar with only a few very poor bikes.

    Good luck :)

    Hi Thor,

Dont your team just have a spare they could lend him as he is your mate? Perhaps one of Tejays old bikes.

Anyhow, is your friend restricted as to where he can cash the thing in (Evans etc) if not take a look at the Planet X deals.

Ah, it's like the good old days - we used to get this thread everyday when C2W was at it's height but since the rules were 'clarified' (i.e. you couldn't get quite such a good deal scamming the tax man for your new wheels) we don't seem to get them so much.

Now, assuming he genuinely wants a bike to ride to work on (after all, that's the purpose of the scheme) I would consider something fairly robust that can take mudguards and a rack but also with decent speed on the road so a cyclo cross bike is a good bet and by coincidence exactly what I have ordered with my C2W scheme
  • Cheers Guys,

Scott Speedster 20 was 1 of the Bikes that i have been looking at for him too, Looks like a Cracker with a Good Spec?

This Planet X Pro Carbon bike looks like a Cracker to be honest, Cheers for Advice Guys, 8)

I have warned him that the C2W scheme is not always the Best option, with Sales Copming up, i will pass on all your advice, Cheers :D
