About to build my bike..

Just wanted to make sure I have everything I need

Are these all the tools I need minus the headset press and star but setter?
http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/TOJWTK/jobsworth_tool_kit

Are these the greases I need?
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... &langId=-1

I'll use a pipe cutter for the steerer tube and bars
I have a stand too

Anything else I need?
I can do all the parts just need to stock up on tools and greases

Depends what parts you are fitting but that covers most eventualities.

It all depends on your build.

Look at Parktools for the jobs you plan on doing and check you tools against the ones they list for the job.

    I'll check out park tools

I'm doing everything except the headset..
Do I need an assembly grease?
  • I built my Banshee up using exactly the same tool kit albeit branded as bikehand. Just had the bikeshop press the headset in and face and install the bottom bracket. Those cheap toolkits are very handy.

nice to know, is it necessary to face the BB?

I didn't want to spend too much on the kit as some tools I wont use very often but as long as they do the job it's fine. They seem pretty generic and just branded under different names
  • Yes, face bb by lbs

I was under the impression with an external BB the facing doesn't really matter

You got that back to front. Again.
It doesn't matter with a cartridge BB.

Oh right, so the threaded BB should be faced then ?
  • Stop thinking and listen.

Why on earth would you think that?

Oh yes, you asked and two people said yes, no people said no.

Unless it has already been done.

sorry and thanks, I'll get it faced by my LBS

Also wanted to check 1 thing, the frame has a 73mm BB shell.

I understand with the hollowtech II it has spacers, for a 73mm BB shell I should use 1 spacer on the drive side and none on the non drive side.., this correct?

    That's what the instructions say.

Quick question, I just bought a tool kit with all the necessary bits. Now for grease, do I really need an anti seize grease or will the standard waterproof grease do? I will also be installing the BB
  • Nope, grease is fine, but nothing is also fine.

There's no carbon parts so I knew it wasn't too important, I take your point but I will use some grease just for the waterproofing mainly. I was thinking the park tool poly 1000 would be fine to use on everything from the BB and headset bearings to the seatpost..

Reckon this will do the steerer tube

    http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewit ... 1271142747

This should do the job right? It doesn't need to last very long just to cut the steerer tube and perhaps a handlebar

Also with the steerer tube, you mark the point just about the stem or top spacer and then cut 2cm below the marking?

    Thanks

Just use a small hacksaw, and no. I think you have cm confused with mm.

I would but the lack of a vice and past experience I don't think it would end well..

I must be, so I cut 2mm below the mark and install the star but about a cm down?
    Unless I've misunderstood
