Chain Slipping in One Gear Only

HEllo,

I'm looking for some advice to save a trip to the LBS and the wallet emptying experience that will surely follow.

My bike has a 9 speed Shimano set up. I've recently changed the cassette to a 12-28 and all seemed fine.

However, when I change down to the 8th gear the chain is constantly slipping. It's fine in 1-7 and on the largest cog in the cassette, it only slips on number 8.

It seems worse when changing down, if I select the lowest gear and then change up it seems to be OK, but to be honest I've not ridden long in that gear as I'm reluctant to do any damage.

Any assistance gratefully received. I know that I should MTFU and not use the 2 lowest gears, but I need them:-(.

Thanks in anticipation.

Z.

  • Sounds to me like the alignment of the deraileur pulleys is not good in that gear.

Put the bike on a stand of some sort and go through the gears - for each shift look at the alignment of the pulleys and the gear. That should at least give you some info about whether the alignment is not good.

Hopefully all that is needed is a minor adjust of the dereaileur alignment screws.

If alignment looks ok, then compare the spacing of the gears on the old cassette to the new one.

    Thanks for the advice.

In the troublesome gear the alignment seemed a little off.

A tweak of the adjuster seems to have sorted things out.

Have a virtual drink on me, and a proper one if ever we meet in the real world. Much cheaper than a trip to the LBS.

Especailly as I'm fighting the urge to buy a new bike.
