Not steep enough for JRod today?

We're a bit undercheesed, so:

  • I'm really struggling to generate any enthusiasm for this race.

I just want it to be over so we can get to the Worlds

  • A big mountain stage with some of the best climbers in good form and not too far off the overall lead - should be good.

I'm less excited about that cheese though.

Even I have to admit that this Vuelta has delivered.

This it is. I seems to have been a good race. Even has an Irishman at the business end.

    It's not you. It's me.

After 30 km, a small group with Gilbert and LL Sanchez about 6 mins ahead.

There was light rain at the start (and rain is forecast for for most of the next days). Currently 9 deg C at the top of the Port de Envalira.

Simon Gerrans not started because of a fractured hip – incurred when he crashed on stage 3 but only detected yesterday.

The break have gone through the first sprint at the foot of the Envalira climb, with a lead of about 10-35.
The steepest part of this climb now begins, although still over 27 kms from the summit.

The next sprint is in 10 kms when the gradient eases off a little – which strikes me as an odd place for a sprint.

The rain has eased off after having been heavy when they were down in the valley (at about the 30 km mark). They're now past the 60 km mark)

Less than 5 km to summit, and break has reduced to just 3 riders – LL Sanchez, Gilbert and Ratto. Chainel 1-30+ back, Brown 2-15+ back.
Front part of peloton (down to about 40 riders after Katusha turned up the pace) at 12-30.
Only about 5 deg C at summit now and raining.
  • 5km from the summit for the break, temperatures of 5ºC await them at the top. Brown and Chainel have dropped off leaving Gilbert, LLS and Ratto up ahead. The gap over the peloton is now 12m30.

No helicopters due to fog so no relay for motorbike pictures so limited info from Eurosport virtually no footage to see.

  • Shame about the lack of live feed so far =(

Should be an interesting close to the stage today. I'm a bit surprised about Gilbert deciding to get into the break, was thinking he'd take things a bit easier on these stages now he's got a stage win under his belt. Maybe he just feels good and wants a bit of breakaway climbing practice.

Typical. Wife and daughter out this afternoon and no live pictures.

Looks very wet at the finish.
  • Sounds like a very troublesome descent

Breakaway split up due to the conditions, LL Sanchez even took a tumble.

Basso and Moreno both dropped from the peloton on the way down.
  • Wow, apparently LL Sanchez just abandoned due to hypothermia o_O

Ratto looks to have this. God knows what is going on behind. Leaders group suddenly looks a lot bigger.

Valverde looks to be dragging himself back.

Yeah, Herrada towed him up towards the lead bunch as it started to break apart. Now he's driving himself from one straggler to the next. Still a lot of work to get on par with the elite GC bunch.
  • Horner attacks, Nibali follow. No one else in the mix.

Ratto looks like he's about to keel over sideways... painful.

Hell of a ride though. ballsy and gritty in equal measure.
