Junior gears?

As above, never heard of them before, what are they?

  • 52-14 Is the maximum gear you are aloud.

    ie 52-39 up front

    and 25-14 rear!

    It's basically to try to protect joints etc. of younger riders and prevent them mashing big gears. Back before the categories were altered juniors were just juniors without any category and used to race with 3rd cats and the senior 3rd cat riders were also restricted (it was 52 x 15 then). Now the juniors will be racing against seniors (potentially of all categories) who don't have restrictions so it helps develop the ability to ride at a pretty high cadence too.

    Yeah, I agree. I very rarely use anything bigger than that in a race anyway, if the race is quick enough to need higher I'm usually exiting through the back door.
