Side all of tyre failing...?

I've read some review about tyres (namely the ones I'm running on at the moment - Hutchinson Fusion 2) cracking or failing on the side. What exactly does this mean and how can you tell it's happened?

Just give them a good looking at. Any unusual cracking should be pretty obvious.

I had this the other week on a Vittoria Zaffiro, the result was some major wobble. I always check the tread but never bother with the sidewall, however that's changed since then.
