Thoughts on this bike damage?

I was going down a narrow hill and got surprised but a truck coming around the corner. Locked up my breaks and both me and the bike went down and slid for 5 meters. Tapping it the sound does not change as you go over the damaged area and sqeezing it the damaged side feels just like the non damaged side and has no give to it. I think my inside knee some how hit the top tube on my way down causing the damage. Any thoughts?

  • If it was mine I would take it to a competent LBS to check it, they may tell you it's only cosmetic but best to know for sure.

I'd second dnwhite88 and get it checked. Whilst your description would suggest it's cosmetic it looks like the frame is cracked or that the carbon has delaminated.

Yeah, there's a pair of flip flops sticking out the top tube :P

  • Yeah, I had just gotten back from the ride and gotten out of my bike shoes and didnt think about the socks. I just heard back from the local bike shop and the first trek rep found the pictures inconclusive but the second trek rep said he saw no damage. The bike shop owner said after examining it and doing the "tap" test he sees no issue with the carbon and gave it a clean bill of health. So I guess its good to go. Still slightly hesitant but I think that's just from all the old horror stories of carbon "catastrophically failing"
