Have your say in a stupid, pointless pub debate

Very simple, I'm outnumbered 3 to 1 in an argument on who would win over 100 metres (from a standing, stopped start) between Cav and Usain Bolt.

Everyone agrees that over 200 metres Cav would win (using his bike, I hasten to add) but I am the only one who thinks he would get the speed up quickly enough to take the 100 m.

See? Pointless!

Thoughts?

There was an analysis of this exact scenario on the radio the other day. Bolt wins over 100 I'm afraid, just... Cav takes too long to get up to speed.

Cav would arrange Jens as the starter, Jens would kick BOLT in the nuts, Cav wins

What if you set it up on an 18% downhill gradient
  • I can beat cav and chris hoy from a standing start on a bicycle to 100m. Don't believe me? I can do it on my cannondale road - bike if I put either of them on this bike

So, in this argument has gearing been factored in? What evidence has been used to determine that cav would not be able to get to 100m faster than Bolt?
If the evidence has come from track racing than this assumption could well be flawed as track cyclists do not gear their bikes for acceleration from 0 kmh but from 30+ kmh (ie they are forced to accelerate from 0kmh slowly as their gearing is high).

My point being if cav was allowed to ride a low geared bike form a standing start would he be able to accelerate at a faster rate and get to 100m faster than, say, chris hoy on a standard geared track bike or usain Bolt running?.
  • Have a look at the legs on that blonde!.......
I could do her some damage.
    What were we talking about?

    Who's shout is it anyway?

I reckon Fernando Alonso could probably do em both with his new F1-powered cycling team.

I'd have my money on Cav as the argument is about rate of acceleration. Bolt would hit terminal velocity before Cav but his TV is way lower than Cav's, so Cav to win easily coming from behind to claim the victory.

I think Cav would struggle in cleats.

    Unless Bolt was wearing heels...

It's just a hill. Get over it.

I think a better comparison was Jamie Staff in his Beijing 2008 form vs Bolt. Staff did the opening leg of the team sprint from a standing start, so he only rode 250m and he held the worlds best time over that distance. I seem to remember when looking at the numbers that it looked fairly close over 100m, slightly favouring Staff, but over 200m there was no contest at all, Staff would have pasted Bolt.

Chris Hoy was asked this very same question last year. He said a world class Man 1 in the team sprint is expected to hit 100m in around 9 seconds.

I'm not sure Cav would beat Bolt over 100m as he hasn't got the watts, but a rider like Jason Kenny would for sure.

Also we are talking about a track sprinter hitting 100m in 9 secs with gearing designed to take the same rider onto 250m. For 100m only they'd be able to ride with more suitable ratio.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.
  • Pretty much impossible to say as there's no cycling event I know of which is a drag race over a very short distance.

Are we talking standing start with a foot on the floor? If Cav is anything like me trying to get away from the lights before getting mown down from behind he'll still be fumbling with the pedals as Bolt crosses the line.
