Just got this and had it set up by the LBS;unfortunately I made a cock-up when ordering(not from my LBS who I really in hindsight should have got the bike from  ) and it's quite a bit larger than I should have. But Mark at City Cycle Centre in Ely has managed to get it set up for me,it just looks a bit funny with the low seat-post.
Only been on a short 12 mile ride(serious newbie)but no problems at all so far so I'll persevere until I find it too big or the look of the seat-post annoys me  .

Smart bike but I do agree it looks a little odd with so little seat post

If you've had a bike fit though and it's OK then just crack on :)

Bad news about the bike size but it is a nice one.
  • Well it was my own fault for not checking the sizes correctly and I probably should have rung Chain Reaction up before I went on an initial ride, but you live and learn I suppose(although sometimes I do wonder about myself  ).

As I said it feels much better after the fitting so I'll carry on at the moment;if this lark kicks in I'll probably see if I can get a reasonable price for this and get a correct frame;suppose I could just change the frame at a later date as it has 105 gear on(seems a bit premature thinking about changing when I've hardly ridden this :| ).

Oh and I had my first cleated pedal fail yesterday;quite embarasing isn't it

It's all part of the learning curve. :)
    Enjoy your bike.
  • Nice bike but personally i'd sell it asap (whilst it's in nearly new condition) and re-order the correct size. Not just because of aesthetics but the ride will not be as intended.

Don't worry, everyone has had a pedal moment at some time! If it rides OK and you're happy with it then just crack on. If it's niggling you I would do what diamonddog ( Nice Bowie reference :) ) said.
  • I have been looking at this bike at chain reaction as the gear on it and price drop is pretty amazing. My only concern is that the bike has Triathlon geometry, will that make much of a difference to a total road newbie? what size did you go for in the end oldbazza and how tall are you?

My brother who is also a road newbie just bought a Felt Z95 becuase it has a more relaxed cycling position and reckons I should go for one of them.

To be honest I would look at something else as it's not the most relaxed bike;it's a 58 but I later found out that the sizes are taken from the top of the bottom bracket so come up bigger;the guy in the LBS has got it to fit me but it needed a shorter bar stem to do it.

On the subject of selling it on what would be a sensible asking price for this considering the chain reaction prices(£730)? Not decided to do this yet but it is starting to bug me  .

  • OB, first off you have a nice bike there. Ridleys are generally regarded as solid, low-frills bike that value the on-road experience over silly, esoteric tech.

Don't let the frame size bother you so long as you have a position that's comfortable. Not long ago all bikes showed a similar amount of seatpost as you are now (don't look at the Show Us your Giants thread). Many cross bikes are set up similar to yours.

If you do want to sell it, do not cut the steerer tube and be careful with the white seatpost. Painted seatposts are notorious for being easily scratched. Reckon to lose £200-300 off your sticker price when you re-sell it.

Ask yourself a couple questions: Do I ride aggressively or for fitness? Do I race, ride sportives, or commute? How long do I intend to keep the bike before I upgrade? The answers have implications for your next steps.
    When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.
  • Thanks for that Jaques. It's mostly going to be used for fitness riding unless of course I really get the bug and fancy entering some locall tt's(that may be a while away   ).I would presume that if I got really serious about doing long rides I'd need something with a smaller frame?
I'm loath to change so soon as I think anything I would get would have a lot worse groupset, especially taking into account what I'll be losing on selling this;I'll probably see how I get on for a while, serves me right for being attracted to the shiny stuff( mmmm carbon,,,,,, )and not taking care of the basics  .

Unless you ride it about for a while and save up for a new, smaller frame? You will always be able to sell that frame on Ebay.

Actually thinking more of going this route, think I'd take too much of a hit at the moment with selling it as Chain Reaction still has it on sale.
