Planning on doing the Lakeland Massive. Looks like the route is half road, half off road. Cyclocross bike would be ideal but planning on using my 29er MTB.

Currently running the stock 2.2 tyres. Any suggestions for something that is going to be quicker? Still want decent grip if wet but want lower rolling resistance and more speed on the roads and hills.

without knowing your current tyres can't really make an informed decision
  • Sorry missed that out.

Currently using Specialized Ground Control Sport, 29×2.1
  • You should be able to fit some 32mm / 35mm cross tyres on your rims, something like these:

  • Probably more comfortable with a 35, had thought a 38 but not really found anything yet.

Will look at those cyclocross ones.
  • What about some Sammy Slicks 700x35? Or will these not have enough grip if its wet?

Wouldn't be my first choice for either a CX or an MTB.

I'd go for a pair of 2.2 Racing Ralphs. I ran them on my 29er (before it was pinched) and it was suitably quick on tarmac (my commute time to work was no different if I rode my CX bike or the 29er) and still had plenty of grip off-road. Okay, gloop gave them an issue, but hey, everything tends to a limit. I was very impressed with them - they work far better on a 29er than they do on a 26. They do howl alarmingly, though!
How would I write my own epitaph? With a crayon - I'm not allowed anything I can sharpen to a sustainable point.

  • The Race Kings seem to have decent review. Narrowest tyre is a 2.0, would prefer something a bit thinner if possible.
