Sorry for the really daft question, but I am going back to a bike after years and trying to install SRAM Rival shifters...which shifter goes to the front derailleur please ? Many thanks

The one on the left. It will click two (or three) times only.

But there's no real technical reason for that is there? I'd guess that it's only that way by convention because most people are right handed

Err, thinking about it, I'm an idiot, of course there is. I was thinking of braking

left and right hand shifters are assymetric so the left one has to go on the left hand side if you want to be able to use it.
The left shifter has less clicks so has to be used for the front mech.

i can't see how you could swap them around.

    You cant swap them,

as for braking, that is entirely your choice.

Can Di2/EPS etc. be configured to drive the mechs with either shifter?

Absolutely, the double-tap lever has to be moved towards the inside of the handlebars to change gear, I wouldn't want to try and use them the other way round. Anyway, I'm pretty sure the levers are contoured to suit left and right handlebar as appropriate. Brakes can be either way and just a matter of running the cable to the preferred caliper.
