Has anyone used the Pacenti SL23 rim? I have Pacenti MTB rims which seem to be great at the minute.

I want to lighten my wheels on the road bike as they are currently the stock Giant ones. (its a 2010 Defy 3).

  • They are significantly more expensive than the two obvious competitors A 23 and Archetype... nobody really understands why...

  • Thanks Ugo, I notice Superstar have them on the volta hub and weigh in ~1490g for the pair for £299. Worth it or can you get better for the price. I wouldnt want to spend more than that!

I don't know... all these small "wheel ventures" appear great value, slashing prices and quoting ludicrously low weight... fact is they use cheap taiwanese hubs (I could use them, but I refuse to) worth around 40 dollars for the pair... most of the times three years later they no longer exist. Don't get obsessed by the weight, it doesn't mean anything... and I mean NOTHING. You can have heavy wheels which are faster than lighter wheels uphill, as well as you can have brilliant light wheels.
I have built myself several sets of light wheels, most of them have been decommissioned very quickly, as they war nothing special. My PB up many climbs have been set on light wheels as well as on heavy wheels...
Get a good diet, stop eating meat and processed rubbish, stop drinking and you will fly.

That said, on paper the Pacenti looks like a nice rim, I have never used it as it's too expensive and the Archetype is damn good.

  • Thanks for the info, very helpful! Dont want to be spending more when I can get an equally good rim for cheaper, and by the sounds of it upgrading may not even be worth it. I have a pretty good diet and dont drink (strange at 26 I know!!!!) so will just keep riding, only reason I thought about changing was that the wheels can feel a bit sluggish to get up to speed and on hills, if that makes sense!

As I said... case by case... I don't know your wheels... some heavy wheels are not bad, others are dreadful... some light wheels are brilliant others are awful.
I have to go with what people tell me as feedback and with my impressions and based on feedback, everybody love the archetype, regardless of spoke count, spoke brand and type or hub choice...
If I had to choose two rims only to build they would be Archetype for clinchers and Nemesis for tubulars, another super popular one.
