to try to bleed my Elixir 1 brakes yesterday and all was going well up to the point of when the two syringes were in place, one on the caliper, one on the lever. It says to open up the clips on the syringe tubes and then squeeze the syringe attached to the caliper (about the 7min mark on the vid), forcing the fluid up into the lever syringe.
However, when I tried to do this I couldn't get the plunger to move on the caliper syringe, it wouldn't budge. I made sure both the tube clips were open, there didn't seem to be any blockages, but the damn fluid wouldn't move.
I squeezed the plunger so hard at one stage, the tube popped off the nipple on the end and fluid sprayed all over the lounge room (note - do outside with glasses on next time!).
Anyone had this problem before with these wretched brakes? I'd rather not pay £25 to get a shop to do them, after paying for the bleed kit, especially if it's something simple I'm forgetting.
Cheers

have you connected the lever syringe to the correct lever?

have you set the lever to the correct position? (ie. read the avid bleed manual).

Yep, was def the right lever.
In the video he doesn't touch the lever, do you mean it should be squeezed in?

OK, got a hold of the manual, a tad different to the video, in that it says to make sure the lever is set to 75-80 mm from the bar. Mine was about 85mm so I guess that's where the problem lay. Will adjust and try again tonight. Thanks
  • Have had this problem - the big seal in the lever/master cyclinder end had disintegrated and it was blocking the fluid from going back and forth. Rebuilt lever with new seals and it was fine.

It was the lever in the end. All I had to do was to wind the lever back in about 10-20mm and it worked as it should. Was still a bit of a fiddly procedure, not helped by the rubber bit coming off the end of one of the syringe plungers half way through the operation. Still, got it finished and although it's not perfect, it was way better than before I changed the brake pads on today's commute.
