Faith in humanity restored!

Had a nightmare this weekend, hit a pot hole and killed my front and rear tires (well tubes). Only had 1 spare with me!
My faith in humanity was restore by the guy that stopped and gave me a spare tube! I then went off and got another puncture within 2 miles. The same guy had been home to get a puncture repair kit and came back out looking for us to check we were ok!
Not sure if he (or the guy that stopped to let me use his mobile) are on here but if you are, you are a true gent and I salute you! Thanks!

It wasn't me, and I've never done such a thing, but I will take the gratitude for it
It is nice to hear theses stories, there are some top blokes and gals out there!http://app.strava.com/athletes/686217
Come on! You call this a storm? Blow, you son of a bitch! Blow! It's time for a showdown! You and me! I'm right here! Come and get me!0 -

Why weren't you prepared? Fail to prepare and prepare to fail. You went out with insufficient spare tubes and puncture repair kit thus relying on the generosity of others to get you out of trouble. Make sure you carry enough spares tubes and repair tools so you can help others in future, but I doubt you will.Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. I was prepared, I had a spare tube AND a puncture repair kit, I had just done so much damage to the tubes that these didn't cut the mustard.Make sure you carry enough spares tubes and repair tools so you can help others in future, but I doubt you will.
You doubt I will?! I would always ask if someone stopped is ok but I won't if they are a condescending cnut like you!0 -

There is a point here under the self-righteousness!
I am lightly paranoid about punctures and stuff, so I carry:
3 tubes
Puncture repair
4 CO2 cartridges
(plus the multi tool)
I had to run home the other day as I had a cartridge failure on my last tube (4 puctures) - now carry one spare.Insert bike here:0 -
4 CO2 cylinders?! Crikey, I bet that's heavier, more bulky, and a whole lot less reliable than a decent mini pump...0

He's clearly a know it all OP so I wouldn't worry, sounds like you had sufficient with you, like you say a condescending ****"Arran, you are like the Tony Benn of smut. You have never diluted your depravity and always stand by your beliefs. You have my respect sir and your wife my pity"

I took one tube in the early days ... Till I needed it and found it was bust and had to walk home. Lesson learned so now take two and a puncture kit. I think most people would be stuffed if they had three punctures in quick succession...0

I had just one spare last week ... and it was bust ... thought I had some patches - but no ... no signal to call for a lift either ... plus it was a narrow country road with a reasonable amount of traffic - so walking down it wouldn't be advisable either...
Fortunately a cyclist came past and gave me a spare ... I've now got 2 spares in the bag + some quick repair patches ...0 -
There seem to be quite a few unprepared cyclists out there and quite a few on this thread. Being rude and derogatory toward some who could potentially save you a long walk home is perhaps not the best approach. But then again they are probably the same in other areas of their lives, when things go pear shaped they rely on others to come to their rescue.Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. But you will be the one with a long walk home in the pissing rain on a cold dark evening. Ha-ha!
FYI I have given tubes and assistance to stranded riders in the past with determined promises to re-imburse me. No seriously not a problem, don't worry about it. But I want to. I promise I'll sort you out with another tube, etc. Ok, numbers exchanged whatever. No further contact or even tube or kit ever materialises. They are the tossers before you start being derogatory toward me or others who have helped other cyclists who have then turned out to be unprepared, selfish stihs by forgetting their obligations. Their gratitude is pretty hollow. TBH I wouldn't mind giving away a tube, it's just that they have then insisted on telling you that they will reimburse you, but of course they don't. They don't have any cash on them for a start.Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.

Now now ....... abuse and bad language towards other forum members just because you know I am right.
I am thinking perhaps you might also pay a visit to Spec Savers as it was after all you who rode through the pot hole causing both your tyres to puncture.Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.

I was once of the no-kit-ride-on-a-wing-and-a-prayer type until a number of punctures persuaded me to carry spares. Tube, puncture kit, everything with the exception of a chain tool and link. Guess what happenned next...0

Mobile phone and some cash is always a good option as well as spare tubes etc too - if worse come to the worst you can phone the wife / team car. Saves a long walk home in the rainBianchi Infinito CV

I carry my iPhone, wrapped in a small re-sealable plastic bag (to keep it dry) together with £20 or so in cash and a debit card.
Put this in the centre rear jersey pocket, then put a packable windproof jacket in the same pocket with the phone nearest your body. The jacket acts as cushioning if you take a spill, unless of course you are wearing it!
What you could also consider is a real cheap, tiny old phone like the little old Nokias with a pay as you go sim card. Bag it up and place it in a seat pack wrapped in something like an old sock.

i have a quadlock mount for my iphone, bit expensive but will not get damaged in a spill, and better than getting glass in your back.
i had a terrible ride once where i cut a slit in my tyre them had 3x punctures in it, now i carry 2x tubes and a sleeve to cover any future slits..
you live and learn, unless you carry a £20 for a taxi each time, but that gets expensiveSpecialized S Works SL2 . Campagnolo Record 11spd. rolling on Campag Zonda wheels

This is what I am going to do going forward, will keep one in my bag with tools and repair kit and the 2nd in my top, just in case. Fingers crossed I won't go round a corner straight into a pot hole again!
For what it is worth, I am doing the same rout again this weekend so will clock where the hole is and report it to the council.0 -
You know what, this forum is beginning to really astound me, a guy posts a perfectly pleasant remark about how someone helped him when he needed it and within half a dozen posts people are calling each other c****!!
This place really is going downhill.0 -
When I'm out driving my cars/motorhome I don't carry a full set of snap-on tools, 3 spare wheels compressor, zip gun etc. because I realise you can't prepare for every eventuality, however smart you think you are
What I do carry is, a fully comp Green Flag card! ... seems to have worked well for the past umpteen years ...
On my bike I carry one spare inner tube, pump, tyre levers and a few patches... oh and a wife with her own car on the end of a phone. This has also worked very well in the past, when on the "odd" occasion I've had multiple punctures and can't be bothered to fix any more!
If I see someone on the side of the road I would always ask if they were OK? ...If they had a puncture I would offer them a patch and maybe help them fix it... but they won't be getting my spare tube!
If somebody had a problem with what I carried with me when out on my bike....I would politely tell them to do one! :roll:0 -
The wife on the end of the phone thingy never works for me. She ain't a phone bunny and will often leave it at home and has in the past responded several days later...0

This.
Some folks need to take a long hard look at themselves - it isn't pleasant is it?0
