Can't get pins out of ultegra 6701 chain!
Hi all,
Am on my first build, have made some progress with levers, brakes + cabling, front/rear mech and chainset installed, but am now trying to shorten an ultegra 6701 chain. It's installed the right directional way, and I've followed the instructions as far as I can see to push out pins from the outer side (marked with ultegra, etc) and on the correct side (left of the larger outer link), but it's not budging. I'm using a halfords chain tool but not sure that's the issue, it's having to turn it so hard to try and push the pins but it's just not budging!
Any tips on things? I've been testing the pin removal on a few of the first links (need to remove 4) so I don't roger the chain but still no joy!
Cheers

My first experience with a Halfords chain tool and a 10 speed chain (105) saw me bend the handle of the tool spectacularly before the pin started to come out. Once out the pin shed a tiny ring of metal which I took to be the peened end of the pin, and the reason they are so bloody hard to remove (and why they cannot be re-used)
Once you know that it's going to be that hard, somehow it helps. As would a beefier workshop type chain tool.
Never had a problem with older 5, 6, 7 and 8 speed chains, the pins of which are presumably just an interference fit.0 -
Hiya. Yeah got it sorted. Proper tool and a bit more welly popped the link pin out and it's all fitted nicely now!
Cheers!0
