what sort of tyre pressure should you have on forest trails

  • Depends on your weight, style and tyre, But between 20-40.

    +1

Look at the max and min values on the tyre

If it's hard packed with rocks and not too many bumps and ruts I'd go high

If it's muddy, and rough I'd go lower

    Generally I run 30 - 45 psi
  • Take a look at this site - it's as good a starting point as any......

  • cheers for reply the link was sound
  • that helped me as well :)
  • Not sure about the link, suggested my pressures at 33/35 when I run 22/24.

Not sure absolute pressures are much use. My track pump gives figures 40% higher than a friend's. It's useful for replicating pressures that I like, but nothing more. I suspect most gauges are similarly inaccurate.

  • I generally run 40psi for trail use, works for me on hard paked trails, drop to about 30 if its muddy and wet.

  • Never seen that link but its pretty helpfull. I've been running mine about 4-6psi below so for once, I'm taking note of a website!

Couldn't tell you exactly what I run, I just tend to pump a load of air in, dig my thumb in the tyre till it feels about right then ride, sometimes I put a bit more in or let a bit out, depending on the terrain and the tyres i've got on
A berm? were you expecting one?

  • yep tends to vary.

    rocky/rutty about 40
    muddy?wet about 30

thats very roughly thou as allday at dry day at stiniog was probably closer to 50

Also depends what size tyre you have bigger volume means you can go lower without risking your rims.

  • Depends what day of the week it is .
  • Great link I had mine pumped up to 60 psi so just abit hard. I did the calcs and should be in the 30's.
Feels much better now and not jarring my hands.
  • 30psi for offroad. Forest trails sounds like hardpack with no obstacles so 40 might be fine.
  • Why would you want to get a pinch flat to tell you?

IME they are caused by mistakes, where you mis-judge a jump or an unweight and slam the rear or hit a corner/edge.

In any case the OP might be running tubeless, he doesn't mention, we are assuming.
