Buying Advice Trek DS?

Hi All.
After months of research I thought I wanted a Trek 8.4/8.5 DS mainly for tow paths, small bumps and trails, nothing serious at all. I had read that the riding position was quite good ( I have suffered from three back ops ). However some wise old owl asked why I needed suspension? The reality is I don't but I really do like disc brakes! So there is my question is there a trek 8.4 / 8.5 style bike with no suspension which I should look at or should I simply lock the forks.
Many thanks
Jools
