Lots of woods where I ride, both on and offroad. Are modern GPS based computers, Garmin, Bryton, Cateye, Strava via phone still effective or are signal problems an issue?

I've got a Garmin and it looses it's position in heavily wood arrears on the road.

Ditto, you'll often find your speed gets halved first, then you'll get dropout. its rare though....
  • If you're moving then it won't be too bad, but if you're searching for a static location - like a geocache - then it can be a problem.

Ok, thats good to know, thanks for the replies.

On the more basic models, Garmin 200 for example, do dropouts affect the accuracy of total distance on a completed ride or is there some sort of mechanism by which they catch up?

Debating whether to get a basic GPS, I like the fact you just fit and go or a cordless computer. Just after speed and distance at this stage.
  • They will catch up, the main thing is that they miss out some tracking points or get them in the wrong place.
