pre-stretching tubular tyres on clincher rims?
I wonder if anyone here can give a definitive answer to this. I've seen discussions on other forums about it, but there is some controversy...
Obviously you can put a tubular tyre on a clincher rim and inflate it (just don't ride it!), but will it properly stretch the tubular given that the diameter of the clincher rim bed is less than the diameter of the lowest part of a tubular rim? And could it slightly deform the base tape of the tubular, resulting in it not bonding quite as well when it is glued to a tubular rim?

I've done this and it's worked fine, no issues. Just don't do crazy with the pressure, I used about 80psi.0 -
So you reckon it worked in the sense of giving the tyre a decent stretch?
I guess it must get a better stretch on a tubular rim, but I suppose if you leave it on long enough it could compensate for that.0 -

Same here... I stretch them on some busted clincher rims I have in the garden... I only inflate them to 30 PSI or so. Wide rims are even better 23 mm or moreleft the forum March 20230 -
Great, I'll give it a go.0
