What's my problem?

I have an issue with my 2010 Nomad (Alu). There is a noise coming from the bike which sounds like an old oil can. A kind of two stage clunk. It was occurring every time the drive side pedal was put under load at the top of the revolution. I checked the cranks and put new bushes and bearings in the pedals, cleaned the drive train. Seemed ok in the garden!

Next ride out i discovered it is still there. It was occurring whilst pedalling but also with pedals level whilst pumping the trail. There is also an occasional 'bag of spanners' loose metal noise from the rear. I think it is either some play in a linkage or my rear hub (superstar switch evo 6 months old), but everything feels tight.

Bought the frame about 2 months ago and it had just had a new pro kit fitted by Stif (although the paperwork never materialised!!)

Any opinions or advice as to what the problem may be before I strip it all down?
Cheers
Andy

Had similar noise with the cassette eating into the splines on the freehub so there was play. Every time the wheel was put under climbing strain there was a dreadful noise. Took me ages to work it out; stripping everything down including suspension bearings, cranks and putting a new BB in. If you havent already its wirth checking there's no damage on the splines from the cassette.

If you've got any spare wheels stick them in, no noise = problem area identified. Otherwise maybe try BB.

  • try adjusting the preload on the linkage bearings.
  • Devbrix I think you have it. Checked everything amd there are some fairly serious gouges in the freehub body (xt cassette on superstar switch evo body). Is there any remedy or is a new freehub body required?

No just put it back on and make sure the lockring is torqued properly, there is minimal load that can be applied 'the wrong way' so if the locknut is tight it can't relax back to then make a noise as it gets pulled forward!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Let us know if it works

  • Turns out it was bb. I think I over tightened the plastic crank tensioner therefore placing side load on the bearings. Whacked in a new bb and it is running perfectly. Thanks for the help.
