Having got caught in an epic downpour during last nights ride I have been thinking of buying some gear to get me through the autumn and winter. I am in North Yorkshire so it can get a bit brutal quite quickly.

At the moment I only have a good base layer (which I wear whatever the weather), some Fox shorts with a liner, and some calf length Seal Skinz.

What sort of layers do you suggest I get. I would have thought I need something that can be thrown in my MULE in case of situations like last night (like a pacamac?) but what is the best option going forward for the colder and wetter weather to come?

  • Decent gloves, thin skull cap under helmet and a pair of Specialized defroster boots. After that it's just layering.

Depends how far you want to go.
Quite often, in autumn, a simple waterproof will suffice, since it's still relatively warm - epecially when you're riding.
If the weather's looking uncertain, I usually pack stick a light softshell jacket in the camelbak.

For more extreme weather, you're going to plan a little ahead, really.
