Hello peeps.
I am looking to buy a bike that has a 105 groupset (10 sp), shifters, brakes, both mechs and cassette. The crankset is a fsa gossmar megaExo. I am looking to upgrade straight off, yeh i know why don't i buy a bike with the parts i want fitted as stock? Answer is they don't make the frame choice i want anymore, plus the price for the bike with 105 on right now is an amazing deal. My question is what will i need to do to swap over to campy chorus??? sure i need to buy the chorus groupset but will i need to change anything else?
thanks guys and gals.

Richard

ps,...Please don't ask "what is wrong with 105?" the answer is nothing! I am just looking to save a few pounds and always wanted to give campy a go. Also the bike is a colnago so wanted to keep it all Italian.

Am I missing something here? You need to buy a chorus group set and change all that over, plus you'll need a campag compatible rear wheel as a campag cassette won't fit on a shimano free hub, you'll need to change the free hub to a campag one.

Oh and make sure the bar tape is campag too.

    thanks,

so...the freehub is not easily swapped i guess? better to get wheels with campag freehub already fitted? why do i need to change the bar tape? are cables ok or will they need to be swapped?

    thanks a bunch.

You will need the Chorus Groupset Usually cheaper if bought separately, but check it out. You will need a BB either English or Italian my Colnago has an Italian BB. Also a Campag compatible rearwheel. You could use a KMC chain instead of a Campag one. The front derailleur Braze on or clip 32/35.

Same wheel is fine, just need to change the freehub bit the cassette fits onto. I'm sure there will be a you tube video you can google to show you how.

Cables are fine, as is bar tape- that was a joke :D

oh, lol...must be a campy thing ey? the bar tape. Will do, dont wanna upset any fellow colnago/bianchi owners, lol.
Prob buy a full chorus groupset and swap out the wheels. How good is chorus compared to shimano and sram?
  • Why would you want to do this? ;)

Chorus is "better" but not so much as to warrant throwing away 105, when 105 needs replacing then go for Chorus. Still its your money.

You'll have to replace bar tape because you won't get the shifters on without doing so.

You'll have to replace the cables as the Shimano cable terminations do not fit Campag equipment.

The Shimano front mech and FSA chainset will work with the Campag left shifter, although it will look a bit weird. The brakes will work OK too, but you'll need new cables again for the same reasons.

You'll have to find out if there's a Campag freehub body option for your rear wheel, otherwise you're looking at either replacing the hub or the wheel.

    So, you need:

    Campag shifters
    Campag cable set
    Campag rear derailleur
    Campag back block
    Campag compatible rear wheel
New bar tape and new gear and brake cables + housing

You should be able to get decent 2nd hand prices for your 105 kit on the old eBay, so it won't be that hideously expensive. I take it you've tried Chorus out on another bike?

    What bike is it?

Swapping over here is a big faff. It can be done. You may end up a quid better off or hundreds worse off.

Is it possible to buy the frame only? Then get a full Chorus groupset?

Incidentally, the only Colnago I can see with a mega exo is the World Cup cyclocross bike.

    That may raise additional complications.......

Complete cable set comes with the Chorus shifters, it's in the box.

Expect a complete Chorus groupset to come in at about £860 (that's what I paid last month anyway).

Come on folks the OP wanted to know what was involved and it is not hard. Rear wheel or freehub change. Bar tape possibly unless the exsisting stuff comes of in one piece that can happen. A chorus groupset is indeed £860 or less. contact me if you go this route. Miche 11 speed cassettes provide good shifting and cost less than a Chrous cassette saving some cash.

cables are included with the shifters. Chorus uses the Ultra torque BB which is nice an simple to install.
Chorus is simply sublime to use and is world apart from 105. Although both shift gears well.

Go for it although I do wonder if you can do it for less by just buying the frame. Only you know however if the deal is good enough to justify the route you are going. Yes 105 parts will sell well in nearly new condition.

Go for it. It is worth it.

No-one claimed it's hard. It's not. But it is a faff. Total change of components.

You won't get much for even "as new" 105 when Merlin are knocking it out for £379.

So, the frame option is best. IF there is a frame option.

  • thanks for all the reply's people, some great info. does seem to be some messing around involved but then hey, thats all the fun. i will then have a bike with my own feelings and effort put into it, not just a stock bike.
