Kryptonite Series II lock jammed shut

Hi all,
I bought a Kryptonite Series II lock about 5 months ago to replace the same one I had before for about 4 years...it broke the crappy mount and ended up somewhere in a ditch.

The new webbing mount is even worse, lasting about a week before the strap gets loose and the lock jams the pedals...anyway, I liked the lock and it now lives in my backpack!

It's jammed shut though - the key simply won't turn at all, and I've tried washing it through with paraffin, WD40 and thin oil to try and move whatever bit of crud is sticking the discs. No luck.

To make things worse, it happens to be locking my bike up in front of a busy supermarket. The bike was bought second hand and isn't security marked, so I have no way of proving it's mine other than having a key which acts like the wrong one. I have a portable generator and angle grinder, so it's not a problem to rock up and cut the damn thing...only issue is being stopped!

So if anyone can come up with a idea to unlock it or prove it's my bike, I'd be very grateful! Otherwise, I'll have to try and steal my bike back in the dead of night...not good. The supermarket isn't in a great area, so I'm hoping someone doesn't steal my bike before I can get it unlocked!

Tell the coppers what you're planning before you start. They might even give you a hand...

Sounds like it could be the old superglue in the lock trick that thieves use when they need to bring extra tools to get through a tough lock.

It might already be too late :(

I'd call the Police, tell em what your going to do, but go down tonight and strip as much off the bike as you can first. That's what i'd do anyway..... All depends on what it's worth though I guess.

It's really not that appealing to thieves I'd imagine, nor is it worth a whole lot (Carrera Gryphon with mudguards held together with gaffer tape) compared to most bikes locked up there, but it's a massive pain in the backside to have it nicked or locked up forever!

Good idea about telling the police, I'll nip into the local station and let them know before heading down with the generator and grinder tomorrow.
  • If there was glue in the lock would you get a key in?
In general WD40 and oil are not good for locks, you want graphite powder (ground up pencil lead) for that.
You could try flushing it out with lighter fluid or maybe acetone and then put some graphite powder in. Acetone would melt super glue if there's any in there.

Have you tried hitting it? I've found that swearing at something and giving it a good whack or a kick often magically gets it to work once you've given up on all else. Might dislodge whatever little part is sticking in the mechanism.

Well, the police were unhelpful as ever so I turned up this afternoon with generator and grinder in the back of my van, told the security guy what I was doing and he stood guard while the grinder cut the lock like soft butter. I've now got my bike back, and am in need of a decent lock...

    Good work.

I saw the local coppers cutting a bike free with some giant bolt-croppers for a woman who'd lost her keys the other day. Maybe you have to be female to get assistance...
