Help choosing wheels!?

My budget is about £300

My LBS suggested some Mavic Aksiums at £180 and run some good tyres.

I read on here about a wheel builder in Leyland, Paul Hewitt. Popped in there and he said he'd do some nice ones for £250, and again echoed about good tyres.

If I get those from PH I wouldn't want to pi55 my LBS of as I think they are amazing!

Someone put a link up to Decathlon who are selling some Mavic Ksyrium Equipment S for £300, but I can't find that wheel easily anywhere else.

My LBS is doing some Mavic Cosmics for £320

Then I read to avoid Mavic wheels??

I really want to support my LBS as they are really good

Help!!!

  • \nice you are giving some consideration to the folks at your bike shop.
But a hand built set of wheels by a novice builder isn't that much of a betrayal.
Get your tires, tubes and c02 cartridges at your LBS. And spend all you can afford on them hoops.
In our shop building wheels isn't even that rewarding in terms of profit because of the large overhead
    and generally lack of time!

about Mavic aksium/cosmic: they're good in stiffness but usually can't compete with a hb in terms of weight to
    price.

    good luck!

Is this a so called "upgrade" or you simply need some wheels for your bike?

Why do I get the feeling that the phrase " you would be better off with a pair of handbuilt wheels" is steaming along in the direction of this thread with depressing inevitability....

It's gone that direction from the word GO... but you can always steer it towards the unbeatable value of a set of discounted Ultegra maybe?
I can't possibly comment on those...

    maybe because he does?

people offer advice on their experience. Its not hard to work out what's good and what's not by that simplest of polls.
Wilier Cento Uno SR 2013 in Fluro Yellow

Campagnolo Zonda, £285... way better than Askiums, available for Campag or Shimano/Sram setups

Is shinybikes not borderline dodgy? I've heard lots of complaints about them... I mean lots!

  • I`ve got a lovely set of handbuilt H Plus Sun Archetype rims on Ambrosio Zenith hubs with CX Ray bladed spokes 28 front and back, built by Strada Wheels earlier this year. Only 600 miles old. You can have those for £320 ;-)

I've heard the same sort of things, but you can buy them for the same price elsewhere no problem.

(I've actually bought £1000s worth of stuff from ShinyBikes and they've never naffed anything up for me, but I am one of those people who always phones smaller outfits to say "I know you're website tells me you have stock but can you actually go check you've got them, because I need them tomorrow, and I'll order now if you guarantee they are with me tomorrow").

Are you replacing them with some Mavics?
  • Not sure yet. Was thinking of something more aero with 35mm deep section rim. Not many hills around Norfolk so i think i`d benefit from aero over weight and comfort.

  • I'll keep an eye out for the blog. If you know of anyone who'd be interested in a set of 23's Ugo point them in my direction.
