Shimano 105 5600

Anyone know if anywhere is still selling Shimano 105 5600 as a groupset???

I managed to snap some of the plastic internals in my Tiagra front STI a while ago and because of work have been putting off getting a replacement. Work situation has recently improved so been looking at 105 as have been advised from my LBS to get 105 upwards because they use metal internals.

5700 105 shifters are around £160 for a pair, but have seen the full 5700 groupo for £380 so thinking for the sake of an extra £200 I might as well treat my bike as it's been a little neglected over the past 3-4 years.

But, hoping I can find a full 105 5600 groupo for cheaper than that if anyone is still selling it as I'm not too concerned about the weight saving or hidden front cables.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

  • I doubt that you will get a new 5600 groupset from anywhere now, but have you tried second hand?
The forum classifieds quite often have 105 or Ultegra groupsets for sale as people upgrade. With the new groupsets recently being released, you may find a good deal on an Ultegra if you are prepared to wait and keep looking.

I wouldn't have a problem with a 2nd hand shifter, but I don't like the idea of 2nd hand groupset.

I'm not even sure I need a full groupset. I only need 1 shifter, but I want to upgrade to 105 (as above) and want my shifters to match ( a bit of snobbery!).

The reason I'm thinking new groupo is I've just started having problems with my rear deralier which may or may not be serious. Getting slipping and some gears won't change - have tried re-indexing etc but even getting it as good as possible it won't change into or out of top gear without some of grinding. A tweak either way on the adjusters just makes things worse so pretty sure I'm in the 'sweet spot'.

I'd have a look at the cable inside the shifter, make sure it's not fraying. Mine was behaving like yours and this was the cause. Simple job to replace the cable if you catch it in time. Leave it too long and you might be trying to fish bits of broken wire out of the shifter internals using watchmaker's forceps.

I've only changed that cable in the past few months, but I'll give it a look tonight cheers.

Something definitely isn't right as the derailier doesn't move as much as it should into and out of top gear.

I would go 5700 over 5600 if only for the under-bartape cable routing - makes for a very clean front end

I've seen 5600 105 for £280 in the past, so I'd rather have £100 in the pocket than a clean front end.

Sorry if I seem prickly, but I'm not asking for 5700 v 5600. I just wanting pointing in the direction of places selling 5600.

I doubt anyone will. you could try calling Merlin/Parkers and see if they've got any old groupsets lying around (they won't appear on the website), but most will have offered deep discounts to get rid of them when 5700 came in

you can still get the individual pieces if you are willing to buy piece by piece from individual stockists, but may end up more expensive.

    eg

(I know it's a triple, and only one lever, but you get the idea)

Is the rear mech hanger straight? If you have knocked it, it could be that it has bent slightly so no amount of adjustment on the adjusters will get it right. Even a new derailleur would not sort it out either...

Make sure that the hanger is straight - you may not be able to tell just by looking, especially with the derailleur still on.
Then, if your cassette and chainset are fine, do as Brearley suggested. This will include new cables.

Halfords are doing the 5700 shifters for 139, just ordered mine, you can also get 15% off that with a code, bringing them down to 119 which is what I paid.

Thanks for this!!! Gave everything a good clean, lube and made a few tweaks and almost got it working perfectly, but it was still sticking in 1 gear so checked the cable and it had started to fray in the shifter.

I buy second hand stuff off the forum regularly. There's a lot of people who buy a new bike, use it for one summer then next season upgrade. The forum users I've bought off look after their bikes and now what they are selling so it's usually all in immaculate condition and if not I find most people on here are honest enough to say why not.
