Is Shimano 8 speed all the same?

I think I know the answer but would be grateful for confirmation.
Is Shimano 8 speed old and new all compatible?
I'm rebuilding my '92 Clockwork Orange which has 8 speed LX Rapidfire combined brake/shifters. Would like to replace them and see there are modern Alivio 8 speed shifters, which I can combine with some V brake levers and v-brakes I have.
Will they be compatible? Can't see why not but thought I'd check.
Cheers

The only thing that's definitely not compatible is Dura-Ace 6/7/8 speed (pre-1997). Anything else 8 speed should be fine.0

Really?!? My answer is still correct, and was included for completeness. I wasn't aware there was such a huge religious schism here so I suppose this means I should take myself off and never return.0
