What Brakes...?

Looking to upgrade the avid elixir 1 I got on my Whyte 29er hardtail. Looking at Hope Tech 4 evo or Shimano SLX/XT. Can afford either.

90Kg.
Ride Cannock/Brennin/Llandegla/Peaks/Long Mynd type stuff, not very aggressive.

Had XT before but heard good things about the long term quality of Hope from friends who have used them for some time. (They also look great and are English)

Used Formula and Avid and not likely to use again.

Answers on a postcard please.....

    Shimano

I'd get the slx and use the change to pimp out the rotors.. but thats just me
  • XT is 13 quid more expensive on Evans's. Worth the extra?

are they better - probably not but XT has more street cred lol

Those XT's cost the same as the SLX I bought a few weeks back - price has come down

times 2 if you're getting front and back

really not worth it, like I said save the extra money and get bigger rotors. rotor upgrade will make much more difference than XT over SLX. Infact XT has no braking benefits, just weight (barely) and cosmetic
  • Cheers bud, its tough as I loved the XT, but its hard to argue with the SLX. do people have issues with Hope or is it just not as good value?
  • Check out SlX on bikediscount.De. I got mine pretty cheap from there, delivered quick. Feel way nicer than previous elixir 3's.

Nothing wrong with hope at all

Shimanos just as good however and cheaper

Another vote for Shimano. Great brakes, never had a problem with them over thousands of miles (I have the XT M785 on the front - never bothered changing the rear since it's hardly ever used).

Based on personal experience, if given the choice I would pick low end shimano over high end avid.

  • cheers, all logical advice. For some reason i want to shell out on Hope, but thats probably the bling factor. XT is a tenner a head more than SLX so will probably go with them and be sensible. :)

I'd say that Shimano has more bling factor than Hope these days for those "in the know", on account of them being the best anchors around, bar none.
    Hope looks good for wannabes.
  • Shimano slx m675 best all rounder get great life out of them excellent for the price

Don't think of bigger discs as an upgrade, just different, I get on just fine with 160/160 discs, likewise no need for icetech for the riding you mention.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

the cost of them is too high. My hope M4 techs with a 203 saw rotor feel no more powerful than my bro in laws deore M596 with a 203 ice tech. the difference is in the modulation between the two which is why I prefer the hope. However it is certainly not worth the extra cash for the type of riding I do but I do like a bit of bling.

I have an SLX on the rear grabbing a 160 ice tech rotor

I don't think the M596s are the same "breed" of brake, are they?
The modulation on the M785 XTs is just incredible.

Still not entirely sure what the differences are between the XT and SLX versions though.

I'd just say avoid avid - I rate any brake by shimano from deore up.

Not sure in the deore model numbers, but basically anything that from shimano looks like the newer style is gonna be a damn good brake. The main different between xt and slx is the bite point, which is adjustable on xt but it makes no difference what so ever. Oh and it's shinier and weighs about a packet of crisps less, about it really.

I run deores on my bike, my mate runs xt and I know someone else running SLX. Honestly - I can't tell the difference between any of them.

So the SLX still has the ceramic pistons, and the servo-wave lever?
    Nice! highly bargaineous then.

Yep and afaik the very latest deore brakes (m615?) have ceramic pistons, servowave and ice tech pads too.

    V-brakes were "fine" as well.

All Shimano feel like they should be badged XT, all Avid like they should be badged Juicy3, Avid brakes work, but the feel and progression is horid compared to Shimano.

I said, what are you comparing them to? What other brakes have you tried?

My 1's are fine at the moment, R's were fine for a while then became a nightmare. Neither are near as good as even the Shimano M395. I'd even favour tektro over avid.

But if they work for your son great, the point is that if they didn't already come with a complete bike, you'd be nuts to buy them over shimano.

hope m4 tech, latest SLX, M596, BB7, cheap shimano cable pull discs, XT v brakes

Fair enough. How do they compare to all those then, in your opinion?
