Hardtail Suggestions £1000-1300

Hi guys
I'm looking for some suggestions for a new hardtail MTB in the region of £1000 to £1300 to replace my old Spec' Rockhopper Expert '09.
It will be used mostly for cross-country / trail riding but with a lot of winter road riding sessions thrown in. My first thought therefore was to go 29er to help swallow the miles but I'm open to other wheel size suggestions if there's a good saving to be had.
Although I was happy enough with the Spec' it often felt a little steep up front so I'm looking for something slightly slacker, though nothing too drastic. It needs to be more of a mile-eater than a play bike.
On that note I'd like to keep weight down as much as possible but still have enough suspension up front to deal with the fun stuff, so a good quality fork is higher on my list than other components.
I'm not using any schemes so retailer is not a problem, though I'd much rather be able to try before I buy so online-only bikes will have to really push my buttons to be considered.

I'm looking to get a Boardman HT Pro, and that seems to fit a fair few of your requirements.
Currently only £850, good spec and forks, and lightweight.
Imagine most similar priced bikes will have worse forks although I could be wrong.0 -
Yeah the Boardman is sure to make it onto my shortlist, though I'm still swaying toward a 29er to help chew up the miles during the winter months when most of my local trails become unridable.

No, it has to be fun but it doesn't need to be a chuckable play bike since I already have one of those. It needs to be more cross country but happy enough to do road work as well.0
