Buying shorts

Can someone please educate me re cycling shorts?
About to buy my first road bike and I will want to get something to ride in.
What should I be looking for? Is padding always included? What are the recommended styles (I heard the phase "bib" but dont know what it means)? The wife shrinks in horror at the thought of my (thinnish) legs in lycra..but guess there's no alternative?
What can I expect to spend ?
Thanks

You're right, there's no way of avoiding them but looking an idiot beats having a sore arse! Bib shorts have straps that come up over the shoulders, which is much more comfortable than having a waistband cutting into you. You get what you pay for with bibs, but make sure the pad or 'chamois' doesn't have any seams in it that might rub. I use DHB vaeon pro ones and would recommend. Also go commando-underwear can also cause irritation on longer rides"It never gets easier, you just go faster"0

Just get a pair of padded DHB bib shorts and see how you get on.
If you want to look more normal, a pair of lightweight cycling baggies with separate padded liner/under-shorts will practically do the same job.
Generally how you look on the bike depends more on your physique and riding style than on what you're wearing0
