Can you feel the Force?

How many people on here are religious and to what degree?
Which religion do you find compelling and why?
If you don't believe, why not?

Simples!

I know some will feel that God, Allah, Yahweh, Jehovah, Vishnu and others play a big part in their lives. I am not looking to denigrate anyone for their beliefs, but I would like a frank debate.

Ahem, there's already a bible bashing thread going - pay attention at the back...

I wouldn't worry about that, you're bound to get some followers still.

For my part, I am an unbeliever. For me, religion has been, and still is, a mechanism to control the masses. Ruling people through fear.

Personally I think it causes more harm than good, but I was brought up a Catholic and have family that are very religious so I have seen that it does give some people comfort or whatever? I don't know! Each to their own.

I was raised as C of E, which meant going to church for weddings, funerals and nowt else. I went to a Catholic school and saw the indoctrination. I have friends who are staunch Catholics and I can't help wondering about how they square the teachings of their Messiah with the machinations of The Vatican.

Wifey is a Catholic and I see the indoctrination thing close up now. No wonder religions are so keen to 'start 'em young' as once you've imprinted beliefs on kids it's hard for them to shake it off no matter how intelligent they are. See third question down:

Only the original series. Kirk was much better than Picard.

Not sure if you deliberately missed the difference between Star trek and Star Wars...

Anyway, where are all the believers to put us heathens straight?

Bishop Facks: So, Father. Do you ever have any doubts about the religious life? Is your faith ever tested? Anything you would be worried about? Any doubts you've been having about any aspects of belief? Anything like that?
Father Dougal: Well, you know the way God made us all, right? And he's looking down at us from heaven and everything?
    Bishop Facks: Uh-huh.
Father Dougal: And then his son came down and saved everyone and all that?
    Bishop Facks: Yes.
Father Dougal: And when we die we're all going to go to heaven?
Bishop Facks: Yes. What about it?
Father Dougal: Well, that's the bit I have trouble with.

  • God, a supreme being creator of all, heaven and hell etc, IMHO things created by man to comfort themselves that there has to be a afterlife.

When you're dead, you're dead end of! Just like any other animal. Being dead is just the same as before birth neither pleasant nor unpleasant, it's how you meet your death that can be horrid.

Childish I know but I do like the line from the inbetweeners movie "I stopped believing in god when i realised its just dog backwards".

I went to a Catholic secondary school as it was about the nearest to my house, we had to study RE until six form, attend various religious services and i guess i pushed back a bit. Sex ed was taught by RE teachers which clearly wasnt ever going to work. I did however end up being the only person to get an A* and suspended for a peice of GCSE RE coursework, entitling it "why religion is for the stupid" may have upset some people.

I have grown up somewhat and married a muslim girl (not exactly strict as she likes a good bacon sarnie) and wouldnt actively bait anyone who was religiously orientated, however if i am collared by one that wants to tell me how to live my life i am afraid they get both barrels.
