advice about gears please

I bought a 2nd hand Ridgeback yesterday with 21 gears ,its my first bike in 15 years and i need advice to which gears i should be in and not be in please.

    Be in the gear you feel comfortable with. Try not to pedal slow and hard. Keep it light and high rpm.

    Look at the chain, it should be fairly straight to avoid premature wear. So no having it in the big ring at the front and the big ring at the back at the same time or vice-versa. So long as you're turning the cranks at least once a second you're doing not bad, below that you need to change to a lower gear.
