do you know any places that do decent mtb hire near Padstow or Bodmin? Fancy a visit to Cardinham trails or Bodmin whilst on hols next week. Says there is hire at the trail centre but what are the bikes like?

Any help would be really appreciated as am desperate to get out for a ride

Not sure on hire but I was wondering about any trails in a 40 minute drive of Fowey?

Not hijacking the thread and I guess it's relevant
  • Unless its changed since the late 90's, Cardinham woods is kinda dull, probably ok for some high speed xc.
  • WoW that's quite a change, then again its e ideal place for it and a good money maker.

Not sure what's up at cardinham bike hire but get on Facebook and join the cardinham trail riders group and you might get a better answer there.

Can't think of any where that does decent bike hire. Maybe bissoe bike hire might do better bikes than the usual bso but that ain't local to Bodmin. Might be worth asking if you can hire a bike from a lbs. Velotive in Newquay, clive Mitchells in Truro, certini in Saltash.

Join some local facebook groups and some one should be able to help

Yeah plenty, 40 mins in Cornwall can get you to most of the county, what sort of riding?

    Good point haha,

Anything ranging from fast flowing singletrack to red routes really

Not blue routes unless they're more the singletrack type than the wide open family ride

Fairly certain Certini dont hire out any bikes (though they do demos lol!) Tavistock cycles and Dartmoor Cycles (in Tavistock :) ) are your best bet, within 50min of where you are and that then gives you the options of the woodland riders trails (£5 per day) but free parking.

  • Thanks everyone, I think Ill experiment first and see if I can fit my bike in the car with all the camping gear. If not will go with the suggestions

Sorry I went a little MIA...

Cardinham blue is more single track than open family riding, there are small sections of fire road linking certain bits. The red sections are fairly short but the blue isn't that bad, smooth but one of the better blue trails around. Easy to find and you won't get lost.

If you are out Bodmin way and fancy some light DH then checkout Grogley. A trial bike will be fine there, no DH bike needed.

At Fowey you could ride some of the coastal path, obviously being mindful of others. Not all is ridable, i.e. going up steps etc...

Local woods at Luxulyan isn't far from Fowey isn't bad - just a matter of exploring really.

Kings woods in St. Austell - limited singletrack but it's ok. Just keep to the woods and don't do the Pentewan trail - that is wide open family paths.

Going further afield, got Idless woods near Truro.

Hustyns/Bishops near Wadebridge - nice single track there but a little overgrown I've heard recently. Can also be linked with Grogley.

Pushing 40 minutes is unity woods & poldice valley near scorrier (probably an hour n a bit). Nice freeride parts with lots of jumps and doubles, small & large - lots of fun!

There is also Bodmin moor for a bit of riding. As mentioned there is Gawton near Tavistock but that's an hour a way atleast I reckon.

Covered a few areas but joining local facebook groups and see if you can get out in a group ride might be helpful to show the local area. Local facebook groups include Cornwall mountain bike club, North Coast Mtb, Cornwall Freeriders, St Austell area Mountain Bikers' (a little quiet that group but that's more local to you). There are others but usually further west.

Would offer but I'm bike-less until I get the next bike built up and tend to keep to Grogley and not much singletrack so I would be a useless guide!

sorry to hijack the thread slightly. But I'm going to be in Newquay for a wedding a couple weeks. Hoping to get some time on the bike too while I'm out there.

Is there any trail centre / way marked trails nearby that I can just follow round without having to worry too much about where I'm going?

I don't know a lot around Newquay sorry.

But cardinham is the place to go for easy signed post riding.
  • went to cardinham a couple of months ago, short but not bad the second red option is worth the cardiac inducing climb.

don't think there was any bike hire at the trail head just a small play park and café but then again I wasent really looking.
