Chain Jumping

Guys - help needed!
Finally dusted off my MTB after the thick end of 10 years of neglect. Got a friend to give it once over for me and I have been slowly getting used to being back in the saddle. Tonight I went out and decided to attack a hill near to home and upon changing gear the chain jumped, I practically knee capped myself and ate my handle bars as it jumped! Since then the chain continued to gain slack and then foul in the 'front mech' / 'chain guide' jobby. No matter whether I select up or down, front or rear cogs the jumping persists....any ideas of how I can sort it out?!
Apologies if this sounds a bit noddy, but getting back into biking after so long off is hard enough without having to re-learn all the lingo and tech stuff!
Thanks in advance
