bottom bracket
is the bottom bracket easy to remove and clean/regrease? Have a Claud Butler San remo 2011 with shimano 2300 set. I can feel an annoying click when I cycle. Have turned the crank without the chain and the click goes. in fact it only clicks when weight is forcing the crank around.
Hoping to solve it by cleaning the BB or at least rule it out.
Recently replaced the rear cassette and chain but this didnt fix it.

have a read of parktools but first ID the crank fitting type.
you will also need the correct tools for the fitting you have. if square taper then the BBs are not serviceable."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Bottom brackets aren't a serviceable item I'm afraid, but they're not too expensive. If you have a good local bike shop ask them to replace it. One word of advice though, get the best you can afford as the better they are you can just fit and forget.0

Right OK. I suppose it makes life a bit easier just replacing it. I spoke with bike shop and they said it was £15 - not sure if that was to check or replace but assume just check. Are there any ways to help determine it's the BB? Took another look after cleaning the jockey wheels last night and there is no click/creaking noise whatsoever when turning the crank, only when you are riding it and it seems to occur mostly when putting pressure on the right pedal more than the left. Bizarre.0

You might want to try removing, greasing and reinstalling the pedals first. If that doesn't cure it, then move on to the BB.
I had a click on the downstroke on the right. Replaced the 105 external BB with an Ultegra one (CRC were selling them cheap!) Click is still there. (despite checking pedals and chainring bolts)
I'll be greasing and checking QR skewer tightness next.0 -

Took each pedal off (R540's) and they were sounding a bit rough. Sprayed them with brake cleaner and tried adding some grease to the join but I wasn't able to figure out how to take them apart to clean properly. May just replace them for cheap see if that fixes it before touching the BB.
You need to grease the QR skewer?! I'd have never thought of doing that. I make sure its tight be not hard to close0 -
"You need to grease the QR skewer?!"
Not strictly need to, but I have read about them creaking / clicking when used dry, and it does seem to make the bike quieter.0 -
You need a cheap plastic Shimano tool to dismantle the pedals and get at the bearings for servicing. And bear in mind that left and right hand pedals have opposite threads.
I've never bothered, opting instead to replace the things if ever the bearings start to deteriorate. That way I get shiny new ones with a fresh retention mechanism etc.0 -
Spray all the spokes with penetrating spray where they go into the wheel - they may have become dry and cause clicking.
Takes 2 seconds and could save a world of hassle.0 -

ok, will try a bit of grease see if helps keep the noise down (the cassette area does seem to be quite loud hence I cleaned up the jockey wheels).keef66 wrote:You need a cheap plastic Shimano tool to dismantle the pedals and get at the bearings for servicing. Yup, won't bother. Will hunt for a replacement set on ebay now..Yossie wrote:Spray all the spokes with penetrating spray where they go into the wheel - they may have become dry and cause clicking.

thanks, will also try this - although I am pretty sure the noise is coming from the crank area, not the wheel. Definitely no harm in trying though0
