Hi

I'm looking at buying some hydraulic disc brakes

Which of these would you say is the best or any others I should look at
I'm not interested in the rotors as much as they're easily upgradable

Shimano XT
Shimano SLX
Hope Tech Evo X2
Avid Elixir 9
Magura M4

Is the XT noticeably better than the SLX brake?
I'd probably buy it as a groupset with the drivetrain so could get the full XT brake set for £100 ish, then scrap the rotors and get some Superstar 203mm and 180mm rotors in a nice colour

Deffinatly XT mate. Ive just put some on mine with shimano RT 76 180mm rotors. Noticeable better power over my Elixir R brakes that I had on!!!

Good to hear, were you running the same rotor size with the avids?

I'm currently using Elixir 3 s, not great, quite spongey even with new pads in but they do the job. Just not as effective as I'd like

I love my Magura MT2, and apparently the MT4 are the same but even lighter. If you can get them for a decent price I'd go for them.

However, I'd be ecstatic with Shimanos also.

    Shimano.
Definitely not Avids. I replaced a set of Avid X0 with Shimano Deore which are a bit heavier but far better at stopping.

Lighter, not better (unless you count lighter as better!).
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Thanks guys, It seems a resounding yes for the Shimanos

I've been doing some research and like the rookie says, SLX and XT brakes are literally identical but the XT is slightly lighter and has reach adjust, otherwise they're the same. I'm not interested in rotors as I'd get some nice coloured ones so if the XT has better rotors it won't sway me. I think if I have the money I'll get XT but otherwise I'll be happy with SLX

Deore and SLX have reach adjust as well.

Sold on the SLX then. I'll save the change and get a dropper post
