Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL cracking sound

Hi,
Since yesterday, I'm owner of the Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL's. I've done 120 km on them and I really like them.
But I have a problem, when just funriding with my family, I heard a cracking sound when accelerating. I've tried to tighten up and loosen the wheel tension (on the quick releases), but it didn't work.
The noise is coming from the front wheel but I can't exactly tell from where it's coming.
Anyone who had this before and knows what I can do to remove the cracking noise?

Thx in advance.

I get this on my 2006 Ksyrium SL,s from time to time, stripping out the spindle and greasing everything cures it for a fair while, its possible they have been assembled dry from the factory, mine were when i first did them.
  • How you mean dry assembled?

Metal on metal contact can cause creaking/cracking noises, like i said the spindles and spacers etc had no oil whatsoever on them, putting some on cured the problem.

    +1

I have experienced this on 3 carbon wheelsets. All came down to lack of lube. Another thing with carbon high profile rims, when you go over small bits of debris on paths, twigs, berries, or leaves or light gravel, it echoes so much through the rim and tyre compared to a lower profile alloy rim. But I would say its more down to the lubing.

With Mavic Cosmic Carbones have you put gaffer tape around the presta valve?
  • @izza, got no tape around the valve. Why?

@Kettrinboy, i'll try to put on some oil and i'll tell you if it worked.

Deep rims do and will rattle in the valve. once wrapped around a valve extender will stop it.
  • Ok thx for the advice.
Didn't know that. Now i see why OPQS pro cycling team does this as well :)
    LOL
  • Both the oiling and the tape worked. Thx a lot!
