Upgrade suggestions

Evening all,
I'm happy to say I've recently bought my 1st road bike. Got a great deal on a 2013 Giant Defy 4 (hope I don't get too slated for this purchase).
Obviously being new to the scene I'm not overly clued up and was wondering if anyone can recommend some cheap and simple upgrades to get the most out of my bike. Have heard that the brakes aren't amazing so may look at upgrading those as being a beginner I'm guessing I'll be getting a lot of use out of them!
The spec can be found at:

I'm gonna get some new pedals for a start.
Any help offered will be much appreciated.

A proper bike fit and some quality bib shorts would always be the first option.
As you suggest though - pedals (clipless) and shoes would be a good bet0 -
I've got the same bike as you.
Clipless pedals added from the outset.
Don't worry about the brakes until they wear down.
Get some use out of the bike first before upgrading. The stock kit is fine.0 -
I also have a defy 4 and its a cracking bike,so don't worry about it being slated. As others I have put new pedals on and new wheels which I had anyway. The brakes are fine and no need to worry about them.Ride it and upgrade as and when you need/want to.
enjoy.Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori0 -

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll just get out and ride the thing. Definitely gonna take some getting used to.0

Ride it until the pads wear out then get better ones. The pads will make more difference than new brakes. Pedals, shoes and tires would be obvious upgrades.0
