Headset Headache!! (Supersix 2012)
Right since my first post a while back I'm happy with taking my headset/forks apart and refitting the bung, now I don't know if I'm being anal here but I swear there is a small amount 2-3mm play when applying the front brake, I've messed up with this before so I don't believe it's the bung as there's a more noticeable amount of play when it's not tightened correctly, any supersix owners have any idea? I've compared it with a caad 10 and synapse that's sat in my garage and they are solid no movement what so ever!
And another quick one I've taken all the bearings and crown race of the forks, in my relentless search for a small creak that is slowly breaking me and the crown race was bone dry, never been greased by the looks of it am I right in thinking it should be?
Right ill shut up, thanks in advance!

Is it a bung instead of a star nut inside the fork steerer? If it is make sure it is fitted far enough inside, and it is unwound enough when fitted so you can tighten it later to take up the slack. Did the same number of headset spacers go back in?0

Yeah its a bung and that's all fitted correctly as I say the play is minimal but noticeable, all the spacers are back on, I'm positive it's not the bung as I've messed that up before and it felt like I had suspension!! :P thanks for the reply buddy0

Crown race doesn't require grease.0

Bit of a long shot, but have you checked the front wheel bearings? Also, make sure the front caliper and brake blocks are nice and tight.

If the fork was cut very slightly too long the headset cap may be bottoming out, meaning you can't eliminate play completely. To check, add in an extra 5mm spacer a try adjusting the headset again.
You can also often spot this problem by checking if there's a ring or marking on the underside of the cap where it's contacting the fork bung.0 -

How does greasing the crown race have any effect on the performance of the lower headset bearing? And where do I obtain this water repellant grease of which you speak?0 -
Cheers for the input guys, gives me a couple of options, I think I now need a new BB bearing one will spin with the littlest of touches whilst on the other side I've got too hold it with my thumb and forefinger too spin it!0

Really oh well never mind, at least people are aware to NEVER buy a used bike from you! You just cant reason with stupidity0 -
I had the same problem on my EVO in that tightening down the stem didnt apply enough pressure to the bearings to make them tight enough, I added a thin washer over the fork steerer and top bearing before then putting on the bearing cover, worked for me.0
