Bikes under £500 - why no Carrera recommendation?

Hi
I am a roadie but thinking of getting a MTB to do some easy rides with family (with child seat on back), but tempted to get something a bit more capable as there are some great new trails near me which I would love to try out and use to maintain fitness over the winter in addition to road training.
I read the guide pinned at the top of these forum but wondered if there is a reason why the Carrera Vulcan and Kraken aren't featured, and also the Voodoo Hoodoo? Are they lacking some recommended basic functionality that is considered important for real off road/ trail riding?
Also, what is considered a good weight for a hard tail Mtb? Most of these bikes under £500 seem to weigh in around 14kg, damn heavy for a road bike rider!
On the road I am happy with a bike in the 7.5-8.5kg range as being light enough to not hold back performance, what is the equivalent weight for a Mtb? If a MTB is heavy is it usually the wheels and fork that make it so heavy?

Mouintain bikers are manly men obviously, or maybe we just prefer that our bikes don't disintegrate underneath us.
But don't worry, a few trails and your muscles will be bursting out of your lycra.
ps welcome to the friendly side of the forum.I don't do smileys.

The Hoodoo and Vulcan still represent good buys.
At sub £500 you are looking at 14kg for a hardtail MTB. Forks are heavy at this price point.0 -

Hard to tell without weighing the components, boardmans can tend to have quite light frames. But probably a bit of everything, wheels, forks, frame, 2x10 instead of 3x9 etc. etc.0
