Derallieur options for use with bar end shifters
I'm toying with the idea of gearing down my touring bike and I'd like to go for an 11-32 cassette. Current set-up is a 105 5701 medium cage rear mech, 12-28 cassette and 10sp Dura Ace bar end shifters. Chainset is 26-36-46.
Will I need to change the rear mech to cope with a 32t sprocket? I believe the 105 mech has a recommended max size of 30t.
If I would need a new derailleur, are there any MTB 10sp models that would be compatible with my shifters?
Cheers.
Rob

You might get a 32 to work, but it could require a longer b screw or turning the screw around. Any shimano mtb mech 10 speed will work.0

Easiest would be to fit 24 inner chain wheel. You would get noticeably lower bottom gear than at present and no need to get a new cassette, change your mech or to lengthen chain. A mid cage mech would cope.0

10speed dyna sys mtb mechs ARE NOT COMPATIBLE with 10speed road mechs. They pull different amounts of cable. One way round the original problem is to put a longer b-tension screw in the road mech. Not ideal or perfect, but I have done it on 2 different bikes when I had no other choice. This allows the 105 mech to take a 32 or 34t cassette.0

Sorry wrong advice from me, 10 sp mountain bike is different from other shimano. Used to be all the same you live and learn !0

Cheers all.
Swapping out the small chainring is the easy option but the cassette will need replacing soon so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.
Looks like bodging the rear mech may be an option, lots of bits of the bike are bodged already anyway!

A 9sp MTB rear mech will work fine (or 8 or 7)
- it's just 10sp MTB which is incompatible0 -
On the latest 105, the SS (short cage) supports a maximum 30T on a double, 28 on a triple. Medium cage (GS) supports up to 32 on a triple.
That means some pretty big jumps between ratios on the rear, so I'd be more tempted to opt for a smaller small chainring up front for more even changes.0
