Trek OCLV Carbon - Aluminium Tube

Hi,
Here's an interesting one (well I think its interesting). I thought that I had a crack in the upright section the carbon frame of my 2008 Trek Fuel Ex 9.5. After stripping it down I found that the section of the upright from bottom bracket to just below the seatpost area was actually an aluminium section and the crack was where the carbon joined the aluminium.
Any carbon in this area seemed to be a cosmetic covering with black paint/laquer on top. Am I being a bit clueless and this is common knowledge?
I'm no expert but carbon and aluminium have different flex properties and paint and laquer have very little flex so its likely that this area was always going to show a "crack".
Anyway I've concluded that it wasn't a crack and the issue is non structural so I'll keep riding the bike - any views on this?
Cheers,

have you got any pictures of the problem?0

I cleaned it up by picking off some of the flaking carbon and found a straight line of aluminium0

Many older frames use bonded alu section, indeed my Zaskar does. It looks with yours though that there is an internal sleeve and the alu and carbon sections are bonded to that.
However I would not hesitate to contact a Trek dealer for a closer look.0 -
I spoke to a Trek dealer. I bought the bike second hand so no Trek warranty (don't get me started). They just advised me to buy a new Trek frame which I can't afford. I need to keep this one going.
Personally this is my first and last Trek bike.0 -
I may be able to help, I'll get someone I know at Trek to look at this thread.0
