Going to auctions, what to look for?

I'm looking into getting into road cycling and thought I'd get a cheap bike from the auctions tomorrow as an entry level bike, without spending hundreds to then find out it's not for me. I'm not much of a bike expert; what things should I look to sort the junk from the decent bikes when I'm deciding what to bid on?

It's someone "greeting" you to the forum.
Look for the thread(s) on buying an entry level bike, absorb some of that info and see if your auction has something suitable.

In your situation I would go to your local bike shop and talk to someone about your requirements.

Auction buying is no place for someone who does not know what they need or are getting when they see it.
