Taking Car of Your Knees ?

Hi,
On and off I suffer knee pain from arthritis caused by a car crash some 22 years ago. The knee problems have got worse this year (to the point where it could not bear weight) & I wonder how any others work around issues like a dodgy knee.
My aims are to keep cycling going for many years (I'm 51 now & have cycled a lot in my life, particularly over the last 6-7 years). I got back in to cycling then after a hospital consultant told me that I would probably need a knee replacement when I was 50. I'm pretty determined not to go that route however but to manage the knee problems (not too good at walking, swelling increases if I don't cycle much, problems are aggrevated by car driving), as knee replacements don't really fit with my idea of managing my own body, best as I can.
It's a very funny knee joint as last week I went out, felt good & trotted out 40 miles at a reasonable pace. I rested a few days but on Sunday really suffered from a creaking joint & barely managed 10 miles. Last night, again all fine & no pain & 28 miles of Dorset's best hills. So basically no particular rhyme or reason.
My question is then how to best manage the joint, bearing in mind that I really really enjoy cycling/swimming & would like to continue to do so for years to come . I am of good body weight. Any trade secrets ? I am by the way deeply cynical on supplements, but would be interested in any positive experiences from any like minded with similar wear & tear ailments !
All the very best
