Halfords have an offer on until wednesday, where if you spend £50, you save £10, £75 - £15 and £100 - £25

They also have a Bryton Rider 20 with HRM for £89.95. You will save £15 straight away, so it will cost £75, but add some tubes, tools, lubes, or whatever to bring the total to over £100, you will get the £25 discount, so the extra bits will be almost free.

Just to say that if you use the B13BP20 20% off code you can get the Bryton Rider 20 GPS Cycle Computer with HRM for a bit under £72 without the need to buy anything else.
  • Halfords sales are difficult to ignore, always some fantastic bargains to be had. Thanks for the info OP.
  • This sounds great for building up a long term trusting relationship with my enthusiastic local bike shop

    I'm sure they'll forgive you

i dont see the fascination with lbs's. They charge you double on what you can get online and you have to listen to the smug employees who reckon they know everything about any given subject. The only pro is if you buy something faulty/damaged you can go straight back down and slap him with it.

I tend to agree with this. LBS need to compete, not necessarily always £ for £ on price but they should be in the ball park and excel in personal service.

I have a good deal with my LBS - if I'm looking to make a significant purchase (say £50-£100 plus) they will match any price I can get online, as near as possible. In some instances I may pay a few pounds more, but then I can trust them to order it for me etc. As an example, I recently bought a set of Zipp 30 wheels; I paid about £15 more with my LBS that the cheapest online retailer, but the LBS gave me a whacking discount on a new chain and cassette, and fitted them free of charge.

Thanks Geo555, I have just snared myself a Mio Cyclo 305 with cadence and HR monitor for the bargain price of £145.00, I've been looking at getting one for ages but the cost of over £300 had put me off a little. I am very happy with that, I just need to find a way to explain this to my wife when I get home...any ideas?!
  • Thanks, this looks like a good deal so I picked one up. As it is ANT+ compatible it looks like I can pick up the Garmin speed/cadence sensor from Amazon (£28 atm) and have a fully fledged computer for around £100, half the price of an Edge 500 bundle.

Struggled to find much online about this device though... does anyone have one already?

There are good bike shops and awful bike shops. Support the good ones because we'd be much poorer without them. Feel free to avoid the bad ones - the sooner they go to the wall the better.

Same here Ian, I picked it up on Thursday, take a couple of days to get used to it as it will seem slow compared to a phone and persevere with the website ! You will think it is not doing what it should but it is?? Ie route saving etc

It seems a pile of people get narked by it and end up giving up but at half the price of a similiar harming it is worth the effort to keep going with it.

First planned ride with it this morning, so here is hoping :D

Great - let me know how it goes! Particularly interested in the 'lagginess'. Is it workable? What about when you're out and about - do the maps/routes lag?

My LBS doesn't do road bikes, that said, neither do Halfords really.

A few quid more, but this might be worth a look:

  • I picked up my Rider 20 yesterday and went for the first ride with it today. Pairing the HRM was simple and it's very easy to start recording. The information display is clear but I've not yet worked out how to show average/max speed as well as current speed - the manual suggests it does it automatically but I only see current speed. Just updated the firmware so hopefully that will fix it.

Other than that it does seem a bit fiddly to use but I'm sure that will go away with practice.

The software works fine on my Mac but it's all a bit basic. However it was easy to get my ride uploaded to the BrytonSport website (a bit like Garmin Connect) where I saved it as a tcx and imported to Strava.

Only a couple of outstanding questions: my Cateye computer and the Rider 20 occasionally disagree on speed. I figure the GPS is a bit laggier but will monitor that one more on my next ride. Also according to the device I burned nearly twice as many calories on the ride as my gf.. 416 calories riding 8.5 miles seems a bit high but this is the first time I've ever checked.

I've never used an edge so cannot compare but for £71 I would definitely recommend it.

I had a motorola speed/cadence sensor with O ring attachment. It's a terrible design. O rings perish over time, especially when that exposed to the elements. I replaced them with zip ties within a fortnight.

The firmware update didn't change anything - it turns out the only way to view average speed is to set the computer to auto scroll between current/average/max speed meaning I could only see my current speed 1/3 of the time. Not ideal as I don't care about max speed and only want to look at average speed occasionally. As a result my cateye computer is still on my bike.

Other than that the Rider 20 is a good device but I need to decide whether to stick with it or put it on eBay and switch to something else that lets me customise the display.

What does average speed really tell you? You can always check that when you download the data. The other Bryton units allow a huge amount of flexibility in screen customisation but I think the 20 is meant to be a simpler device.

I use a rider 20 and it's pretty much perfect if you just want to log a ride and show some basic metrics. If you want lots of info to hand or route planning look elsewhere but for me it is perfect.
I show speed,HR and ride duration.
Wouldn't mind something fancier if I had the spare cash but it's a long, long way down the priority list.
