So, out for a ride just now, going along a nice B road. A truck (truck A) is waiting on the opposite side in a junction to pull out, intending to go the same way as me. Another truck (truck B) with a queue of cars behind is coming in the other direction.

Truck B flashes his lights repeatedly to let truck A out. Truck B stops about 100yds from the junction to let truck A out, who waits until I'm about 20yds away until he pulls out. As soon as he's in my lane in front of me he slams his brakes on and stops for about 20 seconds. As Truck B passes he gives a smile to truck A.

I was riding at about 20mph at the time and had to brake hard to avoid going into the back of truck A.

I had that feeling of wanting to kick the sh*t out of both of them right then. My dad riding behind me had Speedplay cleats so that would have been painful for them.

Road - Dolan Preffisio
MTB - On-One Inbred

I have no idea what's going on here.

Just remember they are probably both fat b4stards whose wives have left them due to their being physically repulsive and who couldn't push a bike up a hill without having a heart attack. :x

    Great Photos!

I had a close one on Wednesday.

Mate and I coming up to a roundabout and turning left. As we're doing this, some chav in a hatchback is coming from the opposite direction and turning right (ie onto the same road as we are turning) he was second in a row of three cars.

we're just about off of the roundabout with mate about two car lengths in front of me. First car passes wide and courteously then this idiot comes swinging off the roundabout, passes me such that I have to pull my elbow in for fear of getting swiped by his wing mirror, he INDICATES left (ie to pull in), swerves into the gap between me and my mate at speed, then swerves out right, past my mate and back in to cut him up - indicating all of his moves, then roars (or at least I'm sure he thought he roared) off up the road. Absolute tw@ !

I was wondering why he was indicating as he did this? Perhaps as a "defence" should something bad have happened?

I think we should stop trying to understand why people do these things - they're just wrong in the head and there's no reason for any of it!

It's jealousy. I honestly believe this to be the case. Some people see cyclist as a reminder that they have never got round to doing something about their fitness or unhealthy lifestyle and they despise us for that. Lorry drivers and tractor drivers are among the worst in my experience. Bikes are about the only thing they can overtake and they relish the chance to prove that a bike is no substitute for an unhealthy diet and a big diesel engine when it comes to overtaking while using a phone.
  • I don't believe people like this are jealous as such, as in they would like to be like the cyclists. They are bullies plain and simple. They derive pleasure from hurting others, especially when they can show off this to their 'friends'.

I believe this to be a lot of the problem on the roads, vehicle drivers see cyclists as lesser than themselves and so will kick downwards.

  • declan, may i enquire, how you take pics of the moon? what sort of camera would i need for that, as whenever i try and take dusk or night shots my phone they are awful, understandably as its a phone, but im keen to find out if i can get a decent not too pricey/complex camera that would enable me to take good lowlight/nocturnal pictures.

excellent photos on you site btw.

To get good low light shots you need a large sensor camera (most D-SLRs) that can soak up all of that lovely light. Phones have tiny sensors that can't 'see' very well in the dark :P

    I use one of these:

    6806-SonyA200mount.jpg

It's quite old and low-end but does the job. To take the close-up photos of the moon I either use this:

    41E3F6HQk9L.jpg

or one of these with the camera on the end:

    a7ccb4e84a9c404ab7fe2d10376cfaf7.jpg

The most essential thing though is a tripod with a remote shutter (basically a shutter button on a cable that doesn't shake the tripod when you press it), which keeps the camera perfectly still, allowing a slow shutter speed (to get more of that lovely light) and better night photos!

With the telescope I've got photos just like this one of the moon:

    Thank you! :)

    Indeed :-)

Is it true the runway and hangars are being mothballed rather than scrapped and the airfield will be maintained by a skeleton crew? If so are you staying on too Steve?

Yip. It's being kept as an RLG (Relief Landing Ground) as its actually a NATO asset. Runway must be kept, VAS (Visiting Air Squadron) will remain as will the UAS (University Air Squadron). Hangars will be more or less mothballed (the Army seemingly will only use one of them), the HAS's (Hardened Air Shelters) will be mothballed too. The Army don't want the place by the way just as much as the RAF don't want to leave.

The plan is to keep the enough staff to man the runway etc for diversion aircraft, Nothern QRA etc. and for possible detachment aircraft. An armed aircraft can't land at a civvie airport, and the distance between Lossiemouth and Conninsby is too great, hence the reprieve of sorts.

Whether we are all kept or not remains to be seen. It's a choice of no cover at all (highly unlikely), cover Monday-Friday during the day 07:30-17:30 which would require around half of us (possible) or 24/7 as now (which makes the most sense due to scrambled aircraft etc) and would mean we would all remain. HOWEVER, Westminster and common sense are not great bedfellows.

These 3 options are on the table now and we are told we will hear the decision sometime in September, fingers crossed! :?
